Environmental Policy

At Greens Department we recognize that the operation and maintenance of the club does have a
fundamental link with the environment and impact within the Thornhill community and Upper
East Don River watershed. Management and staff endeavours to manage this operation to make
only a positive impact on the environment. The Environmental Management System (EMS)
provides the framework for the integration of the environmentally sensitive practices into all facets
of the Golf Course and Clubhouse grounds activities. The club will comply with all legislation and
regulations that relate to the management of the Thornhill Country Club.

Greens Department is committed to:

- Prevent and minimize the impact on the environment by our turf management program
- Share the responsibility of health and safety and environmental policies among our employees,
--contractors and suppliers
- Train, educate and communicate environmental policies to our employees
- Design, manage and operate our facilities to protect the environment
- Meet and exceed all regulations for the best health of employees and the environment
- Prepare objectives and targets annually to improve our environmental performance
- Continue to improve our EMS and remain current with leading IPM systems

The Greens Department has developed a very detailed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practice
that realizes the importance of maintaining healthy strong turf in an environmentally positive
manner without the dependence of pesticides. The turf program is developed based on biannual
soil samples, tissue sampling (starting in 2006), daily scouting for pests, overseeding with
improved turf species and an aerifying program that encourages improved gas exchange (venting)
and root growth. The club has endeavoured to improve growing conditions around fine turf areas
through tree removal, pruning and root pruning.

The club does use pesticides when required to control damaging pests in the key turf areas such
as the greens, tees and fairways. Some pest damage will be tolerated in the rough and out of play
areas. We use only registered products and ensure that our equipment is calibrated prior to each
use and all products are used within the rates listed on the labels. We feel that pesticides are safe
when used properly and ensure that there is no opportunity for products to drift or move off the
target site.
